Beckenbaur was one of the classiest German players ever and made the sweeper role his own during his international career.

The Italian sweeper was not the most physically imposing but was a class act and went to two World Cups, 1982 and 1990.

Captained Brazil to victory in the 1970 World Cup and scored one of the best World Cup goals ever in the final. Unfortunately he was injured for the World Cup four years later.

Cannavaro is the only defender to have won the FIFA World Player Of The Year Award (2006) and he won the World Cup at the third attempt in the same year.

Facchetti is remembered as one of the game best attacking full backs but he was also equally adept in central defence. He reached the final with Italy in 1970.

Generally considered one of the best defenders to have played in the modern game, Maldini won one World Cup and played in a total of four World Cups.
